The department of Elementary Education at the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) is holding a series of webinars on Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) under the MoU between NCERT and National Agency of Education (EDUFI) and GINTL, Finland. This webinar concentrates on STEAM in ECEC.
NCERT and GINTL India present: Webinar series on early childhood education and care
During the webinar the experts from the University of Jyväskylä, Piia Parviainen and Otto Virkkula, will provide insights into the following topics related to STEAM approach to learning during foundational years: (1) What is STEAM?, (2) Why to use STEAM approach to learning new skills and knowledge?, and (3) How to implement STEAM approach in learning?
Speakers
Piia Parviainen
University teacher and Doctoral researcher Piia Parviainen teaches on several courses in the early childhood teacher education programme at the Faculty of Education and Psychology, University of Jyväskylä, Finland. In addition to courses related to early childhood education, she teaches on the courses “Mathematics in early years” and “Environmental phenomenon and STEAM in early years”. She has also designed and conducted several PD programmes and webinars in early childhood mathematics education and STEAM approach in early childhood education both in Finland and abroad. Her research focuses on early childhood mathematics education, of which she has published peer-reviewed articles in international scientific journals.
Otto Virkkula
Otto Virkkula is a University Teacher from the University of Jyväskylä, Finland, working for the faculty of Education and Psychology. He is an expert in early childhood education and has extensive teaching experience in ECEC teaching children from zero to 7 years old. During his teaching career in the city of Jyväskylä he has participated in several development projects in ECEC, which focused on the services provided to families and children. Virkkula made his master’s thesis about how parents can support their children’s science, mathematical and technological competence. At the University of Jyväskylä Virkkula teaches and develops especially basic and professional studies in education and focuses on science and technology education, play and cooperation with the families in ECEC.
