Breakout Room Topics

Breakout Room 1: Coordination and Financial Management

  • Dr. Sai Väyrynen (Director GINTL Network, University of Helsinki)
  • Katja Nieminen (Head of International Affairs, Unit for Strategy and Science Policy, University of Oulu)

Why, what and who? Sharing thoughts about coordination: Why do we need/have GINTL? What is GINTL doing? Who are the GINTL actors? And what are your expectations? We can discuss common questions concerning projects that involve two or more institutions: how to organise coordination in an effective way. We will share our past experiences and find practical ways to predict and avoid common challenges and seek for possible solutions together.

Breakout Room 2: Planning the Next GINTL Africa Partner Meeting

  • Dr. Marika Matengu (University Teacher ITE & EdGlo, Faculty of Education, University of Oulu)
  • Maaria Manyando (Project Coordinator GINTL Africa & China, University of Helsinki)

One of the aims of GINTL is to establish an active and close network between Finnish GINTL higher education institutions and selected African partners as well as other key stakeholders. In this breakout room, we will discuss and identify the need for and focus of the GINTL Africa partner meeting 2022. We will also discuss and plan how GINTL HEIs can coordinate and implement partner meetings collaboratively.

Breakout Room 3: Doctoral Studies and (Co-)Supervision

  • Elina LehtomDr. Hanna Posti-Ahokas (Regional Expert GINTL Africa, University of Helsinki)
  • Dr. Elizabeth Eta (Postdoctoral researcher, GINTL Africa, University of Helsinki)
  • Dr. Ilkka Jormanainen (ICT for development, University of Eastern Finland)

Finnish Universities enroll a constant number of doctoral students from African countries. The global pandemic has changed the conditions of cooperation in doctoral education. Please join to share experiences and practical information on supervision of doctoral students from African countries. We will also share first findings from an ongoing study of doctoral dissertations on education development in Africa completed in 2000–2021 at Finnish universities.

Breakout Room 4: Institutional Agreement Related Issues, Mobility & Exchanges

  • Roseanna Avento (Global Development Manager, University of Eastern Finland)
  • Aija Ahokas (Manager of Education Export, Metropolia University of Applied Sciences)
  • Katariina Alava (Coordinator, International Relations, Metropolia University of Applied Sciences)

The University of Eastern Finland and Metropolia UAS both have long experience in working together with partners from Africa. In this session, we discuss good practices and challenges in practicalities and modalities on forming institutional agreements and partnerships, mobility, and exchanges. In the discussions, we aim to identify possible synergies and possibilities within the GINTL network, for creating better mobilities between Africa and Finland
