Welcome to the fifth webinar on “Technology Used for Children’s Learning” with guest speakers Professor Heikki Lyytinen, Professor Hannele Niemi, and Dr. Jenny Niu.

The series is focused on the Unique Finnish Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) System. It looks on pedagogy and early childhood teacher education as key elements ensuring the equitability and quality of ECEC. The webinars will share the best research, practices, and concrete pedagogical methods of early childhood education in Finland and discuss them with Chinese partners.

Speakers

Professor Heikki Lyytinen

Heikki Lyytinen, emeritus professor of Developmental Neuropsychology and UNESCO Chair on Inclusive Literacy Learning to All (2015-2021), University of Jyväskylä, Finland (-2021), now senior researcher of the Niilo Mäki Institute, Jyväskylä, Finland and Haskins Laboratories, Yale, USA. PI of the Jyväskylä Longitudinal study of Dyslexia (JLD, 1996-2020) and GraphoWorld Initiative & projects (see grapholearn.info). For more, see heikki.lyytinen.info. Professor Hannele Niemi

Hannele Niemi is Professor, Research Director at the University of Helsinki. She has been she has nominated as UNESCO Chair on Educational Ecosystems for Equity and Quality of Learning 2018-2021 and 2022-2026. Prior to working at the University of Helsinki, Niemi served as a Professor of Education in the Teacher Education Departments of Oulu, Turku, and Tampere Universities in Finland (1987–1998) having a long experience of working with teachers in their pre or in-service phases.  

She also served as a Visiting Professor at Michigan State University (1989) and as a Visiting Scholar at Stanford University (2010, 2013, and 2015, 7 months in total). She is also the Chair of the University Board at the University of Lapland (2018-2020, 2021-2023) that is the Northeast university in Europe. She is a member of the advisory board (2018-) in educational sciences at the University of People (U.S.A) that is totally on-line uversity offering BA and MA programs for HE students in vulnerable contexts without tuition fees.  She has a long experience of Chinese cooperation by leading as the Chair of Sino-Finnish joint Learning Innovation institute since 2016 together with Beijing Normal University.

Dr. Shuanghong Jenny Niu

Shuanghong Jenny Niu, obtained her Ph.D. from the University of Helsinki in the year 2021, specializing in education, and D.Sc. from Aalto University in the year 2009, specializing in leadership and customer relationship management. Her recent publication is teaching and learning 21st-century competencies: paving the way to the future. Currently, she is working in the Faculty of Educational Sciences at the University of Helsinki. She has dedicated to the research fields of school leadership and management; teachers’ education and training; learning and teaching methods; and the development of 21st-century competencies. She provides teachings for school principals and teachers with the courses of School leadership and management, Educational leadership; Phenomenon-based learning, Digital storytelling pedagogical method, Skillful Class and Kids’ Skills pedagogical methods. She has over 20 years of rich working experience in various positions in international companies and over 10 years’ work at several universities.

Shuanghong Jenny Niu, obtained her Ph.D. from the University of Helsinki in the year 2021, and D.Sc. from Aalto University in the year 2009. Her recent publication is teaching and learning 21st-century competencies. Currently she is working in GINTL coordination team in the Faculty of Educational Sciences at the University of Helsinki. She has dedicated to the research fields of school leadership and management; teachers’ education and training; pedagogical methods; and the development of 21st-century competencies and collaborating with Beijing Normal University.
