About the Sino-Finnish Joint Learning Innovation Institute (JoLII)

The Sino-Finnish Joint Learning Innovation Institute (JoLII) was established in 2015 and is based on the cooperation between the Ministry of Education of China and the Ministry of Education and Culture of Finland. JoLII is coordinated nationally by Beijing Normal University (BNU) and the University of Helsinki (UH). JoLII currently has 25 members, which include Chinese and Finnish universities, companies, schools, and other educational organisations.

Its mission is to get Chinese and Finnish researchers, teachers, and companies to work together for high quality learning and education to all people. Each year, JoLII organises a conference either in China or in Finland. In the summer of 2023, we welcome all researchers, teachers, other educational experts, and companies to participate in the 2023 JoLII Global Conference in Helsinki.

The JoLII Global Conference 2023

The JoLII Global Conference is held on 15-16 August 2023 at the University of Helsinki, Finland. The main organiser of the conference is the Global Innovation Network for Teaching and Learning (GINTL), which is a network formed by Finnish higher education institutions, together with partners from India, China, and Africa. GINTL aims at co-creating research-based solutions to global educational challenges and collaborate in research and education.

Conference theme: “Education for the Future”

The main theme of the 2023 JoLII Global Conference will be “Education for the Future”. The conference theme draws inspiration from the 2021 UNESCO report Reimagining our Futures Together which emphasises the need for a new social contract for education to repair injustices, while transforming the future.

There are many global challenges in education, including unequal opportunities for high quality learning to all people, and gaps in the availability to new digital technology and learning environments. These and other educational challenges call for research and innovation, as well as global solidarity and international cooperation. The JoLII Global Conference aims to be an arena for carrying out these discussions and sharing research and solutions to realise education for the future.

The topic can be approached from different perspectives and with different methodological choices. The important subthemes are, for example:

  • How to prepare students for predictable and unpredictable changes?
  • How is teachers’ work changing and why?
  • How to promote policy and practices that equity and quality of education would be more reality to all children in the future?
  • How to support education in conditions with risks of dropping out (e.g., rural areas, catastrophes, refugees, immigration)?

The conference will feature keynote speeches, thematic research sessions, panel discussions, networking opportunities, and hands-on workshops. You are most welcome to submit your abstract to present in one of the thematic sessions.

More information about the conference will be updated on the conference website:
