Final GINTL visit to India: Charting pathways for a collaborative future

A delegation from the University of Jyväskylä and the University of Helsinki, visited their Indian partner Azim Premji University in Bangalore, India. The aim of the visit was to provide collaborating researchers across the three institutions with a platform to plan the future of joint projects, either active or in-planning, initiated through GINTL’s support. Delegates led workshops on key themes, engaged in talks, visited schools and collectively discussed the future of their tri-lateral collaboration. As the funding period ends in December 2024, the visit was a step towards encouraging sustainability of partnerships formed under the GINTL India network.

Developing a research agenda for climate change education – ideas from Kerala

Kerala, India’s southernmost state, is increasingly becoming more vulnerable to climate change. Therefore, a local civil society – academia coalition recently embarked on a process to develop a research agenda on climate and sustainability education and to contribute with ideas for climate change education. Originally, the project is rooted in a GINTL collaboration. The newly funded project aims to develop collaborative activities to promote education for sustainable development in teacher education by focusing on sustainability competences, pedagogical solutions and implementing the sustainability activities in regards of the local needs. Following the goals of GINTL, the project aims to support lifelong learning and inclusive education in teacher education.

Doctoral researchers produce information for practical needs in the shared doctoral researcher position system

The selected persons work simultaneously for the University of Eastern Finland and another employer. Learning to Design – Designing to Learn: Report from an exchange from South Africa to Finnish classrooms

The Learning to Design – Designing to Learn (LDDL) project is part of ongoing education research collaboration between the universities of Helsinki and Johannesburg, initiated in 2017. It received GINTL project funding from the University of Helsinki for the funding period 2022-2024. A team of teachers and experts visited the Viikki teacher training school in Helsinki to experience STEM learning. As South African schools are introducing a subject of coding and robotics to the general education curricula, the visiting educators reported some observations on how these topics are integrated in the practices of STEM education in Finland.

With a population that holds ten times more traditional healers than doctors, the practice of traditional phytomedicine is one deeply rooted in Beninese culture – despite local scientific researchers’ views on the quality of a share of that practice. In an attempt to strengthen the bond between traditional healers and scientific researchers in Benin and to improve both their practices and Beninese medicine more widely, a knowledge-sharing collaboration was construed between the University of Helsinki and a group of Beninese researchers. For this project spotlight, GINTL research assistant Luna Erica met with Leena Hanski, Victorien Dougnon, and Jean-Robert Klotoe to discuss their team’s research.

In the midst of a global learning crisis, the future of education is a hot topic in research. But where does a concept as abstract as the future of education begin, and how can we begin to approach it in order to realise a future as bright as possible? Hanna Lampi is a university lecturer at the University of Helsinki who has spent nearly twenty years doing just that: approaching the future of education from a novel perspective, namely, that of the future of the students themselves. Supported by a GINTL travel grant, Hanna recently visited Tanzania to build on her research. She shared all the highlights of that trip and her studies at large in an interview with Luna Erica, a research assistant at GINTL, for this article.

Two joint collaborations between Finnish HEIs and Indian government partners underway

The GINTL India coordination is currently managing two collaborations with Indian state bodies, where several GINTL member HEIs from Finland are involved. One collaboration is with NCERT (“the EDUFI of India”) and another with the Kerala State Education Department. These collaborations are excellent platforms for colleagues from India and Finland to get acquainted with each other and current work in the education sector of the two countries. We warmly welcome more interested staff members working in one of the GINTL India member HEIs in Finland to participate in these collaborations.

At this year’s Sino-Finnish Joint Learning Innovation Institute (JoLII) Conference, GINTL had the pleasure of hosting a thematic session by the Global Innovation Network for Teaching and Learning (GINTL)’s China coordination, on the topic of ‘Sino-Finnish collaboration in teaching, learning and teacher education’. This session was built up of three presentations, each from a different GINTL-funded initiative, with afterwards a panel discussion by the presenters as well as additional discussants. The session was chaired by Dr. Olli-Pekka Malinen from the GINTL China Coordination at the University of Helsinki.

Takeaways from GINTL’s Symposium at the 2022 FERA Conference

In late November, the GINTL team attended the annual FERA Conference at the University of Oulu. The 2022 edition was held under the theme ‘Multivocality in the Changing World of Education’ and was supported by keynote speakers Katariina Holma, Veli-Matti Värri, Sanna Järvelä, Kristine Lund, Outi Ylitapio-Mäntylä, and Karin Murris. On top of these great speeches and parallel sessions, GINTL hosted its very own symposium at the conference, bringing together education experts and academics from all over the world to discuss global partnerships in education development.

Finnish Asia Network publication: “Finnish online education cooperation with Asian higher education institutions: recommendations for future projects”

The COVID-19 pandemic forced us to rearrange educational programmes in unexpected ways. In order to gauge how Finnish education cooperation projects with Asian partner institutions have met the challenges and identified good practices, a survey was conducted by the Finnish University Network for Asian Studies as part of the Digitree project funded by the Finnish National Agency for Education. This report summarises management and cooperation practices that have worked well, as well as issues that could be improved upon for the benefit of future projects.

A delegation from the Department of Teacher Education of University of Turku had the pleasure to visit India in the end of September 2022. The visit was part of the University of Turku’s (UTU) GINTL activities, a collaboration with the Tata Steel Foundation and ASPIRE in the Thousand Schools programme. The Thousand Schools programme was initiated in 2015 and is working towards equal and quality education for all the children in India. UTU joined the programme in 2021, at the same time with the start of the Global Innovation Network for Teaching and Learning (GINTL).

The GINTL India coordination from University of Jyväskylä, together with University of Helsinki, completed a 5-day visit to India on 19-23 September 2022. Our 10-member delegation visited several key organisations in Delhi, Bengaluru (Karnataka) and Uttarakhand. The aims of the visit included raising awareness of the GINTL network and its activities, and furthering existing and new partnerships for co-created projects. Together with our hosts, we learned more about each other and the context.

GINTL India & NCI Winter School 2022: Strengthening children’s and teachers’ social and emotional skills

GINTL India & Nordic Centre in India organise a week long (2 hours a day) Winter School on 28 November - 2 December that provides insights on children's and teachers' social and emotional skills. During the week Finnish and Indian experts share about their research and experiences to Finnish and Indian upcoming teachers and in-service teachers. Winter school is open for all master's level students, degree and non-degree, who are interested in social and emotional skills in the educational context. Winter school is organised completely online and participants can choose to join the programme each day or pick the most interesting sessions.

In the Faculty of Educational Sciences, international Africa Day was an opportunity to showcase and reflect on diverse past and ongoing Africa collaborations and to encourage more students and faculty to engage with Africa. This article contains topics related to research projects, mobility opportunities to and from Africa and Finland, strategic and sustainable partnerships, teaching programmes and developmental projects. The topics discussed indicated that Africa related research and activities are embedded within the faculty’s core activities, however, with room for improvement in terms of the institutionalisation of partnerships and enhancing inbound mobility.
